This study implements a cutting edge and innovative preventive intervention intended to meet survivors of opioid overdoses attended by EMS, where they are by providing an initial dose of buprenorphine for withdrawal relief and ongoing support for medication assisted treatment (MAT) initiation in a rural county in North Carolina. The county will start by developing the infrastructure and capacity needed in order to implement the strategy. A process evaluation will take place during the capacity building phase. Once the capacity and infrastructure are in place and implementation begins, an outcome evaluation will take place to assess the success of the intervention to engage opioid overdose survivors in long-term MAT.
